Overview of the HillRom Monarch Vest Airway Clearance System

The HillRom Monarch Vest is a new and powerful airway clearance device.  And yes, it is one of our favorite systems.

Because it does not require hoses or cables, the Monarch Vest provides truly mobile High Frequency Chest Wall Oscillation (HFCWO) therapy.   But don’t think that the Monarch Vest is a wimp just because it is not run from a power outlet.  Because the HillRom Monarch Vest uses a rechargeable battery it does not need to be plugged into an outlet for use.  Even though it runs off a battery, the Monarch Vest delivers a powerful and highly effective form of CPT Therapy.  Regular therapy with the Monarch Vest results in thinning and mobilizing secretions from the airways.  Consequently,  because it is totally mobile, you don’t have to interrupt your day to do your daily treatments!  The Monarch Vest System allows the user to participate in everyday activities without the constraints of hoses and power cables.  And, it looks totally cool.  No joke.

How is the Monarch Vest different from other Airway Clearance Systems?

The Monarch Vest Airway Clearance System uses eight pulmonary oscillating discs (PODs), containing powerful magnets.  In Contrast, the traditional airway clearance systems utilize air pulse units combined with air hoses and inflatable vest garments.  The Monarch’s PODs oscillate and provide targeted kinetic energy to the each lobe of the user’s lungs.  As a result, these oscillations produce airflow inside the lungs to (1) help thin and (2) move mucus from the small airways to the large airways.  Then, during treatment pauses, the user can then coughs up the excess mucus.  Sometimes, users add an insufflator / exsufflator such as the Philips CoughAssist T70 or the HillRom VitalCough.

Is the Monarch Vest right for you?

The Monarch Vest is designed for fully mobile users.  The kind of people that like to stay active.  If you are a couch potato, this isn’t the device for you.  But, it is ONLY for people that have the ability to stand and sit without assistance.  Therefore, if you are unable to stand or sit without assistance, we recommend the HillRom Vest Model 105 or the RespirTech inCourage Systems.  In addition, the Monarch Vest is for users that are at least 15 years of age.  It is highly adjustable, but obviously can only be adjusted to a certain minimum size, about that of a 15 year old’s torso size.  Very sorry, you have to be able to be at least this tall to go on this ride.
